“By wearing jewelry, is also a reflection how we appreciate and respect people,” says Ross.
“I am feeling alive and happy wearing jewelry”. Without wearing it, she feels bare and not dynamic.
“But believe me, the jewelry only reflect its enchanting beauty if the wearer are carrying her inner beauty. That’s the way the jewelry get its power to reflect your goddess inside.” she says.

She says that the handcrafted handmade beaded jewelry are more rich in color, and expressed the strong personality of the dynamic soul of the wearer.
Ross found out that most of the handmade handcrafted beaded jewelry lover, is a familiar socializing person, warm hearted, open minded, brave, have strong artistic spirit, with self-esteem, and a cheerful romantic person.
And most of the wearer have strong character, optimistic, have sense of humor, and strong empathy feeling to others.

*Before The 60′s

Until the 1960’s, the Indonesian had almost no knowledge about colored beaded and silver metal for their jewelry.
Silver just been used only for households, gifts and handicrafts. And the imitation jewelry was not recognized yet, accept the vermeil ( gold plated on silver).

The silver, the low carat gold, and other material using in jewelry just been recognized from the West tourists when visited Bali and Java at late ’60’s.

In the old days, the middle–up society recognize only the genuine gold, diamond, sea pearl, and some kind of precious stone like Jade, Sapphire, Ruby, Alexandrite and Coral.
Only the genuine with quality. Or none at all.

From very small, Ross’ dearest mother had adorned her and her only sister with genuine jewelries. Just about gold, diamond and precious stones. Her mother was a traditional fashionable woman in modern style.

Her mother used to wear “ Kebaya” , an Indonesian traditional blouse, wearing with fine Batik Sarung (sarong). Her mother’s kebaya always trimmed by beautiful fine hand embroidery on the see through Paris textile. (see also : “Indonesia Treasures,Heritage and Legacy/Batik, Sarong Kebaya” on this Blog).

Her mother’s bra shoulder holder/string is made of genuine gold ‘coins’ holding her strong shoulder wearing a see through kebaya. And her genuine gold belt about 10 cm/4″ width.

This entrepreneur lady, also used to wear big embroidered belt (to hold the sarong) with its huge embossed buckle which is made of genuine gold.

Like other Indonesian, her mother used to wear jewelries which only made of genuine 22-23 carat gold.
For daily she wear the plain gold with sea pearl or jade. And for occasional she wears always fine clear diamonds jewelry .
But if she was among the ‘misfortune’ people, she never worn all her gold accessories. Same happened if she just at home, go shopping, or went to Ross’ school.
(In those years, the gap between the poor and the rich is not too wide. Not like todays, where the rich getting richer and poor getting dying).

“The mystery of the beauty of jewelry will reflect if we wear it in the right place and right event,” says Ross.

“I could remember your mother big gold belt, wrap around trough her waist and the gold coins as bra holder, ” amaze her friend about Ross mom’s jewelry.
Some of her mother bangles and bracelets consists almost hundred pieces of diamond in each bracelet. This very hard working lady also had a chain gold bracelet about 0,5 kg weight.

Her mother had very long healthy shiny black hair, which used to rolled in a traditional hair coil style. And to hold the hair do, she always adorn with a traditional style pair of genuine gold big hair pins.
(Her dearest mother passed away young, when Ross just a little girl. She left all the treasures that she got from her own sweat, to her dearest husband. Some years later her husband remarried. And all her legacy ‘get lost’ into the new wife and new children).

Those jewelry information is just a sample to describe and to inform you about Ross knowledge and as a witness about what had been worn by the Indonesian women of the certain society, till the late 1950’s.
Hoping this could be an additional information in fashion knowledge of Indonesia. This is the only reason ; as an eyewitness of the old times fashion around her, in Indonesia. By chance only, the model is her mother.

Till 1960’s Ross recognized the gold smith only. She never knew if outside there are also other kind of jewelry crafters. Like the silver smith and other metals crafter.

But after had traveled a lot, and as a journalist, she met lot of small entrepreneurs, different small people and village crafters around her country.
And after Ross had visited about 30 countries/big cities in the world, she could see much clearer the distinction and even the similarity.

Since then, Ross falling in love with handicrafts and appreciate more the village artisan and crafters work. The crafters handmade jewelry and accessories. And it is not just about gold or diamond anymore.

She falls in love with the ethnic, tribal and boho touch, in timeless fashion style, in clean and tidy style. This a bit different comparing the gold and diamond jewelry.

“For no doubt, diamond jewelry is expensive , luxurious and have its social class. And in the same time will show someone investment and richness. But it is monotonous and less of ‘color’. And it take ‘risk’ to change the design and style. Not dynamic,” Ross says.

“ It is wise to differentiate between having jewelry just for investment or just for collection, or just showing off , than wearing jewelry because of its beauty and to beautify our self,” she says.
She also says, “ Especially if you live in a country where are millions of poor grass roots. How could one should wear sparkling genuine gold and diamonds just only for showing off their richness? It’ s too ironical…..”

She admit that, its an dear enjoyment to have genuine diamond pieces. But not as a walking investment .
Jewelry would reflect its soul if wearing it happily as a wearable jewelry piece .Without fear.

Following Ross, if a jewelry wearer suddenly refuse to wear their (favorite) jewelry, that would be a signal that they are in unhealthy condition. Being ill, sick, been sad or been tumbled down in deep sorrow and grief.

In other hand Ross also found out, that people who are falling in love, feeling happy, being creative, exciting, dynamic, or in positive action, would love to wear jewelry,chic dress and accessories (and make up). And for certain it will radiate their beauty and the happiness inside.
